Opinion: One Everton player could give Marco Silva a difficult dilemma this summer

|

Everton could have a shortage in midfield this summer with so many players being tipped for an exit – Idrissa Gueye has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, Andre Gomes could reject Everton for Tottenham and Morgan Schneiderlin is reportedly up for sale.

Marco Silva could be left with only James McCarthy and Tom Davies in midfield, and what’s worse is that McCarthy may not want to stay as he was mistreated by the Everton manager in January. Silva forced the 28-year-old to remain at Goodison Park as he needed him as backup for Gomes and Gueye, but McCarthy barely featured and spent five months on the periphery.

It’s unlikely that he could be convinced to stay this summer as a result. McCarthy needs first-team football and was willing to leave Everton on loan in January to get it. He’s had interest from Crystal Palace, Celtic and West Ham United, and has been told by Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy that he won’t be selected unless he’s playing regularly at club level.

Silva can’t afford to let him leave, however, as he could already lose up to four players from the engine room.
