Allow me to play devil’s advocate on Moise Kean’s future at Everton

I know I’ve frequently pooh-poohed the prospect of Moise Kean leaving Everton this summer but allow me to play devil’s advocate here.

The Athletic say the 20-year-old could be on the move before the transfer window shuts, although they don’t specify in what capacity.

I’m confident Kean will stay this summer as Everton are lacking depth in attack, but could that change if we brought in a replacement?

Which club did Everton loan Cenk Tosun out to in January?

Ancelotti doesn’t trust Kean in the Premier League

When fit, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison should play every minute of every Premier League game this season. The pair have amassed 520/540 minutes in the top-flight so far, so Kean might struggle to get a look-in.

The Italian international has only racked up 13 minutes of football across two substitute appearances in the league and was left on the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

This may be because Kean only managed two goals and two assists in 29 league games last season. Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison shared 26 goals in the top-flight, so why wouldn’t Ancelotti back the duo?

Kean has been given more opportunities in the EFL Cup (2/2 appearances, 104/180 minutes) this season, finding the back of the net in both games, so he is improving. It’s just hard to see him starting every week unless an injury crisis struck.

Kean’s agent is trying to get him back to Italy

Mino Raiola has been in talks with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus over Kean returning to Italy, but his efforts have so far proven futile. I’ve spoken about the harm Raiola is doing by unsettling his client, but the stories aren’t going away.

The transfer window shuts in five days, but the rumour mill will be in overdrive as we approach the end. Kean was signed on a five-year deal last summer, so it’s hard to see us abandoning the project just 12 months in.

Things haven’t gone to plan with his poor form and disciplinary problems, but Kean has still featured in four of our five outings this season and has made the squad in every game without fail.

Summary

I don’t believe Kean will leave, but it does appear his representative wants him back at Italy.

We are on the hunt for another striker – Callum Wilson, Emmanuel Dennis, Odsonne Edouard, Patrik Schick, Hee-chan Hwang, Hirving Lozano, Martin Braithwaite, Andrea Belotti, Sardar Azmoun and Victor Osimhen, Arkadiusz Milik – but won’t leave ourselves short in attack.

Put simply, there won’t be a sale unless there’s a player coming in.
