Jordan Pickford has been a regular between the sticks for Everton over the last two seasons, but his place in the side may be up for grabs. Sport (h/t Daily Mail) reported on Friday that Everton are desperate to sign Jasper Cillessen, even after bringing Jonas Lössl to Goodison Park this summer. The 30-year-old wants to leave Barcelona due to a lack of playing time, so he’d surely only be joining Everton if he was given reassurances by Marco Silva?
Since Pickford’s move from Sunderland in 2017, he’s made 86 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees, conceding 120 goals and keeping 26 clean sheets. In the Premier League last season, the England international made 92 saves and shut out 14 sides, but that may not be enough to keep his starting place in 2019/20 if reports are to be believed.
Cillessen joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2016 and has made only 32 appearances for the Catalan giants in the three seasons that followed. He made only three La Liga outings last season and played just 90 minutes in the Champions League. The Dutch international is expected to leave this summer, but it’s hard to see Everton procuring his signature.
Pickford has a bright future and won’t want to play second fiddle at Goodison Park if a new shot-stopper is brought in. Cillessen won’t leave Barcelona to be on the periphery with his new club either. Would Silva really sign the Dutchman and drop the Englishman? It’s unlikely…
