Opinion: Everton won’t sign £53k-per-week AS Roma man

|

Marco Silva is expected to bring in another midfielder in the coming weeks, potentially to replace Idrissa Gueye who has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain. Morgan Schneiderlin may be considering his future too after falling down the pecking order last season. Victor Wanyama has been mentioned as potential replacements, but Fabian Delph may be on his way to Merseyside instead.

According to Leggo, Everton are also interested in Steven Nzonzi and could battle Olympique Marseille for his signature. The £53k-per-week midfielder could be on the move after just one year at AS Roma, but it’s hard to see Silva bringing him to Goodison Park this summer. The French international turns 31 in December and would cost around £18m to sign.

Nzonzi would have been a good acquisition years ago, but there’s little value in bringing him to Goodison Park now. The 30-year-old has made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Giallorossi, scoring and creating three goals. It speaks volumes that Roma are considering offloading him less than 12 months after signing him from Sevilla.

He won’t be short of interest if Roma make him available this summer, but Everton should turn their attentions elsewhere.
