Opinion: Everton still in the race for £27m OGC Nice man despite confusing French reports

Everton have been linked with a move for Allan Saint-Maximin, with Marco Silva eyeing a wide-man to strengthen his attack for a top-six push in 2019/20. With Theo Walcott struggling for form last season, the Toffees have been tipped to sign a potential replacement in Saint-Maximin who’s coming off the back of an impressive campaign – 11 goals/assists in 34 Ligue 1 games.

According to GFFN, however, Newcastle are leading the race for the 22-year-old’s signature despite not agreeing a deal with Nice. The report says the Magpies are close to agreeing personal terms with the winger but are yet to meet his £26.9m asking price – Newcastle aren’t budging on £22.4m.

Given the Toon Army are managerless and are still uncertain over their ownership, it’s hard to see them negotiating with Nice for Saint-Maximin. Mike Ashley isn’t going to put money towards transfers while he’s trying to sell the club. It’s also unlikely that Newcastle would make moves for transfer targets without a manager’s input.

In my opinion, Everton don’t have to worry about Newcastle’s interest in the winger. If the two clubs haven’t agreed on a free for Saint-Maximin, he isn’t close to move this summer. The latest reports from France don’t make much sense.
