Opinion: Everton should sign £80k-per-week Manchester City man if 29-year-old leaves

|

Idrissa Gueye has an uncertain future at Everton with Paris Saint-Germain showing interest in the 29-year-old. If he leaves this summer, Marco Silva would have to scour the transfer market for a replacement. Everton will need a ball-winning midfielder who is composed in possession and has high levels of industry, so Fabian Delph may be the ideal signing.

The £80k-per-week Manchester City midfielder will be available for sale this summer after falling down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium. Delph made 20 appearances in all competitions last season, but only racked up 725 minutes of Premier League football after falling behind Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho in the pecking order.

Delph would be taking a step down leaving the Premier League champions but Everton are a side challenging for a top-six finish so they would surely lead the race for his signature if Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea aren’t interested. The 29-year-old has a £15m asking price and £4m-a-year wages to match, but the money from Gueye’s sale could go towards his replacement.

There’s no suggestion the Blues are in the market for Delph – as Gueye remains an Everton player – but they should consider the England international if the latter does leave.
