Everton have a defensive crisis this season with Marco Silva short on options at centre-back. The Toffees released Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams while loaning out Matthew Pennington, but they failed to bring in a replacement. This left Marco Silva with Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate, so he can’t afford to lose another player at the heart of the defence.

The Premier League and Championship transfer window is shut, but Everton  can still sign players on a free transfer until September 2 if they’re unattached. One player the Toffees could consider is Martin Caceres – a player who Calciomercato say was on Silva’s radar in 2018. The 32-year-old is a free agent after being released by Juventus.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia) say AS Monaco are leading the race for his signature, so Everton have their work cut out to bring him to Goodison Park. Caceres made 119 appearances in all competitions for the Old Lady, scoring and creating 13 goals. The Uruguayan international won six Serie A titles, two Coppa Italias and two Supercoppa Italias in Turin too.

Caceres would be a good squad player, but Silva could also turn to Morgan Feeney and Lewis Gibson at centre-back in case of injury.
