Opinion: Everton should consider England international to strengthen attack

|

Marco Silva has Cenk Tosun, Oumar Niasse, Moise Kean and Dominic Calvert-Lewin at his disposal in attack, but Tosun and Niasse could soon be on their way out of Everton which may force the Blues boss to consider a replacement.

The summer transfer window is shut, but Premier League clubs can still sign free transfers until September 2. There is one unattached player who could improve the squad – Daniel Sturridge. The 29-year-old was released by Liverpool this summer and is yet to sign for a new club.

According to the Daily Express (h/t The Sun), AS Monaco and Trabzonspor are interested in Sturridge and could make a late move to procure his signature. If Everton are successful offloading their deadwood, they’d benefit from another centre-forward giving Silva more options in attack.

Sturridge’s wages and fitness woes are an issue, however. At Liverpool, he earned £130k-per-week/£6.8m-a-year and has racked up fewer than 800 minutes of Premier League football in each of the last three seasons – 2016/17 (769), 2017/18 (431), 2018/19 (496) – while scoring just seven goals.

It’s not hard to see why clubs haven’t flocked to Sturridge, but the England international is still one of the best free agents available to Everton. Whether they make a move remains to be seen, however.
