Why have Everton let Moise Kean join Paris Saint-Germain?

It makes no sense. It really doesn’t. We’re short up front as it is, so why would we let Moise Kean leave on loan without having a replacement lined up? We’ve had a great start to 2020/21 and have Dominic Calvert-Lewin firing on all cylinders with Richarlison, but I think we’ll regret the decision to let Kean join Paris Saint-Germain for the season.

Which club did Everton loan Cenk Tosun out to in January?

Why have we offloaded him?

Kean hasn’t had the best start to life at Everton. He’s struggled for form and playing time since last summer’s move from Juventus and has broken a number of club rules in the last 12 months too. You could argue had Kean not been signed for the long-term, nobody would be shocked at him leaving.

The 20-year-old has made 37 appearances in all competitions for us, scoring only four goals with two assists. He’s amassed only 847 minutes of playing time in the Premier League, however, as Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison have been preferred in attack.

Nevertheless, joining PSG is a strange move for Kean as he has stiff competition for a starting place – Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Mauro Icardi. The Italian international hasn’t set the place alight at Everton, so would he really fare better in France?

How will we replace Kean?

The transfer window shut on Monday night, so we can’t sign players from the Premier League or Europe anymore. We can still shop in the Football League for another 10 days, however, so there might be some enquiries for talented strikers in the Championship.

Oumar Niasse was released this summer and Cenk Tosun is still recovering from a serious knee injury, so we’re not exactly blessed with depth in attack. Carlo Ancelotti can turn to Richarlison if Calvert-Lewin was injured and have another winger fill the void, but we could do with another centre-forward.

Summary

I’m still scratching my head at this. I don’t know why Everton would leave themselves short in attack and I don’t know why Kean would want to join PSG given the competition for places.

Ancelotti had given the 20-year-old opportunities this season and Kean had two goals to his name already, so I figured he’d be staying to here to develop. Now his long-term future at Goodison Park may be in doubt as it’s believed PSG installed a buying option.
