Opinion: Everton could keep key player after shock Man Utd transfer, boost for Marco Silva

Idrissa Gueye came close to a move to Paris Saint-Germain in January and wanted the Ligue 1 giants to return for him this summer, but their latest acquisition of Ander Herrera could mean they’ve turned their attentions elsewhere. It’s a major boost for Marco Silva as he’ll retain a key player in the Everton midfield, but Gueye might not be pleased at his dream move being thwarted.

The 29-year-old is one of the best ball-winning midfielders in the Premier League. This season, Gueye has made 27 appearances, blocked eight shots, won 27 aerial duels (47%), made 40 clearances, averaged 52 passes-per-game with 84% accuracy, made 19 successful dribbles (76%) and averaged a tackle (117) or interception (61) every 13 minutes.

With PSG expected to lose Adrien Rabiot this summer, they’ve been in the market for a central midfielder and Gueye appeared to be perfect for their squad. However, their inability to agree a deal with Everton led to them surprisingly signing a pre-contract deal with Herrera instead. He’ll join on a free transfer this summer and will provide a watered down role to Gueye’s.

Everton want to push for a top-six finish in the Premier League next season so keeping the Senegalese international is vital.
