Opinion: Decision to leave Everton on loan has backfired for 24-year-old

|

Matthew Pennington joined Hull City on a season-long loan in August, but his decision to leave Everton has backfired. Despite the Toffees being short on centre-backs, the 24-year-old was still deemed surplus to requirements by Marco Silva and has been temporarily moved on. Unfortunately, Pennington’s stint at Hull has resulted in him sitting on the bench.

The centre-back has made just three appearances in all competitions for the Tigers, two of which have come in the EFL Cup – 3-0 win over Tranmere Rovers (August 13), penalty-shootout defeat to Preston North End (August 27). His only Championship came against Millwall (August 31) and saw him given just 17 minutes of playing time.

Pennington doesn’t appear to have a future at Everton as he’s behind Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate in the pecking order. He’s not doing much for his development by stagnating at Hull either. The 24-year-old picked up an injury last month that kept him sidelined for a number of weeks.

Pennington has racked up just 197 minutes of football in the first seven weeks of the season and currently finds himself behind Reece Burke & Jordy de Wijs under Grant McCann. Whether he can get more regular action at the KCOM Stadium remains to be seen.
