Opinion: Could Marco Silva use £35k-per-week Everton man at centre-back?

|

Everton failed to sign a centre-back before the summer transfer window shut, leaving Marco Silva with only Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate to choose from. Holgate didn’t cover himself in glory during pre-season and may have Silva consider alternate options in case of injury to Keane and Mina.

Lewis Gibson is sure to get minutes after impressing over the summer, but Cuco Martina might also be in contention. Everton’s £35k-per-week defender has been on the periphery in the last 12 months, but he was given a shirt number ahead of the Toffees’ opening game of the 2019/20 campaign – No.30.

As per Transfermarkt, Martina has played 54 games at centre-back in his career, although none of those appearances came in an Everton shirt. The 29-year-old was used in a central role during his loan move to Feyenoord last season, however.

It would be a major U-turn by Silva to bring Martina back. The Curacao international hasn’t played for Everton since March 2018 and was made available for sale this summer. The Everton boss didn’t consider Martina as a backup option to Seamus Coleman and opted to sign Djibril Sidibe instead.

Will Martina be given one last chance?
