Opinion: Carlo Ancelotti has decision to make on £80k-per-week Everton man

|

Carlo Ancelotti may have a decision to make on Fabian Delph after the 30-year-old was sent off in Everton’s 3-2 win over Watford. Delph picked up two yellow cards against the Hornets and will now miss Everton’s meeting with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The £10million midfielder has made 15 Premier League appearances this season and has been on the winning side only twice when playing a full 90 minutes – 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers (September 1, 2019), 1-0 win over Burnley (December 26).

In Everton’s last eight games, Delph has been substituted on or off three times, while being sent off once. After winning two league titles with Manchester City and having made 20 caps for England, Everton would have expected a lot more from Delph. He’s so far been underwhelming, however.

As per WhoScored, the £80k-per-week midfielder has blocked 17 passes/crosses/shots, made 23 tackles, 13 interceptions, 15 clearances, 21 successful dribbles (81%), won 15 aerial duels (63%), created six chances and averaged 48.7 passes-per-game with 86% accuracy.

However, he’s been dribbled past 12 times and given away 18 fouls, so he’s been guilty of sloppy midfield play. Everton still don’t have Andre Gomes back in action, so Ancelotti may have to call upon Morgan Schneiderlin. Whether he’s a better option than Delph remains to be seen, however.

Does Delph have a future at Goodison after this?
