Everton have confirmed the departure of Joe Williams to Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old failed to make a first-team appearance before leaving and did little more than make the matchday squad on six occasions. As per Transfermarkt, Williams racked up 62 appearances at u23 level, scoring and creating eight goals.

The midfielder’s lack of playing time at Goodison Park led to loan moves away at Barnsley (July 20, 2017 – May 31, 2018) and Bolton Wanderers (August 23, 2018 – May 31, 2019), and now he’s sealed a permanent move to the Championship. His departure comes as little surprise as he was low down the pecking order under Marco Silva.

The Everton manager has Fabian Delph, Andre Gomes, Morgan Schneiderlin, Tom Davies, Beni Baningime, James McCarthy and Muhamed Besic at his disposal, so there wasn’t any room for Williams. The former England u20 international could quickly establish himself as a first-teamer at Wigan after making 64 Championship appearances in the last two seasons.

He can operate in a defensive or attacking midfield role, and on either flank, so he’ll bring versatility to the DW Stadium in 2019/20. Everton won’t shed many tears over his departure, but Wigan are certainly excited with their new acquisition.
