Official: Matthew Pennington loan update

|

Matthew Pennington joined Hull City on a season-long loan in early August, but his stint at the KCOM Stadium hasn’t exactly gone to plan. The 24-year-old has struggled for playing time and only recently made his league debut – against Millwall (Championship) on August 31.

Pennington was an unused substitute in Hull’s 2-1 win over Reading (August 10) but was left out of the matchday squad against Brentford (August 17), Blackburn Rovers (August 20) and Bristol City (August 24). He’s featured in the EFL Cup against Tranmere Rovers (August 13) and Preston North End (August 27), however.

The centre-back was surplus to requirements at Everton and was loaned out to continue his development at a side willing to give him minutes. Pennington has made only nine appearances for the Toffees since making his debut in 2016 and has spent more time on loan than at Goodison Park.

He’s played for Tranmere Rovers, Coventry City, Walsall, Leeds United and Ipswich, making a total of 111 appearances in all competitions. Pennington doesn’t appear to have a future on Merseyside, but he’s hardly putting himself in the shop window while on loan either.

Hull’s next match is against Wigan Athletic (Championship) on September 14.
