Everton have been in the hunt for a left back since Scottish defender Gary Naysmith was allowed to leave for Sheffield United.

Sunderland had previously been in talks with Baines after they had reportedly agreed a fee with Wigan, however Roy Keane was put off by Baines’ supposed desire to play for Everton, and decided not to pursue the deal further.

The bid from Everton is believed to be a cash sum of 4 million pounds and a player, reported to be either Lee Carsley or James McFadden.
