Newcastle United fans may have been bantering about Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s ‘little arms’ in the midweek Premier League encounter where the points were shared, but the England stopper had the last laugh, particularly with his late save on the day as Christian Atsu looked to secure their winner.
England’s No 1 is a prime candidate now for criticism on even the appearance of a small misjudgment or a mistake, because clearly no other stopper ever makes those, but he’s also the subject of praise on regular occasions owing to his efforts between the sticks.
That was true on Wednesday evening once again, and with manager Marco Silva playing down his efforts in his post-game interviews, it actually speaks to his reliability in matches for us.
“It is a normal situation for him, with his quality. I didn’t see anything different from the previous game at home. It is normal with his quality and he helped the team again. It’s nothing new.”
Maybe Silva was non-plussed about his performance, or maybe he even chose his words carefully to make the reliable point in a strong but subtle way given criticisms in recent matches levelled towards him, whatever the case may be, it doesn’t make his words any less true.
