Report: Potential transfer ‘appeals’ to £25.2m-rated Everton man facing uncertain future under Ancelotti

|

Gylfi Sigurdsson is attracted by the prospect of a potential move to Major League Soccer amid doubt over his future at Everton under Carlo Ancelotti, according to The Athletic.

Sigurdsson has started in seven of Ancelotti’s nine Premier League games in charge of the club, with the club’s former £45million record signing only sitting out our draws with West Ham and Newcastle United through a groin injury.

The £100,000-per-week midfielder has often been shoehorned into the line-up, though, with Ancelotti calling on Sigurdsson to feature in a deeper central midfield role or on the left, as he did against Arsenal on Sunday.

Sigurdsson does not see either role as his best position, and feels he is more suited to playing in a more advanced playmaker role that saw him achieve 12 of his 13 goals and five of his six assists in the Premier League last season.

That position is not thought to be on offer in the long-term at Goodison Park all the while Ancelotti is in charge, though, and a future on the left of midfield would not make for the best option going forward.

Should Ancelotti decide to name Sigurdsson anywhere other than in a creative role against Manchester United this Sunday coming, it would be seen as the Italian showing his hesitancy to trust the Iceland international in the future.

Sigurdsson is determined to try and change that viewpoint over the remaining ten league games, as he is resolute in his desire to guide his Everton career back on track and his belief in being capable of producing the performances needed to help guide the Toffees to the next level.

Should the now £25.2m-rated midfielder fail to restore his status as a key figure in Royal Blue after his successes of last term, the future could include a move to Major League Soccer for Sigurdsson as life in the States, potentially on the West Coast, ‘appeals’ to him.

Should Everton sell Sigurdsson this summer?

Sigurdsson’s uncertain future at Goodison Park could become somewhat clearer this weekend when we host Manchester United, with it suggested that Ancelotti’s team selection will offer an insight into the Italian’s long-term thinking over the 30-year-old’s role on Merseyside.

Ancelotti is expected to persist with a 4-4-2 next season like he has in seven of his ten games at the helm across all competitions so far, leaving Sigurdsson either facing a future on the left or in a central midfield role.

Sigurdsson sees himself more as a conventional number ten playing in an advanced role, though that may not be on offer at Goodison Park next term.

Competition for places in the centre may also be different, with it noted that Ancelotti is hoping to bring in at least one new central midfielder in the summer window.

Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin are anticipated to have a place in our Premier League squad next term, while Sigurdsson, Morgan Schneiderlin, Fabian Delph and Tom Davies would be in the mix alongside whoever the boss strives to sign.

Alex Iwobi, Bernard and academy sensation Anthony Gordon would be the expected wide-left contingent on the blue side of Stanley Park, while Theo Walcott and one new signing would compete for duties on the right.

In other Everton news, the club are willing to pay £30m for an ‘essential’ summer signing after Ancelotti met with owner Farhad Moshiri.
