Everton manager Roberto Martinez speaking after the disappointing start to the season with a 2-2 draw at Leicester City: “We should have won the game and we only have ourselves to blame,”

Having played well despite giving away a sloppy goal in the first half, Everton came back out with a 2-1 lead and every reason to expect to go on to victory at a poor Leicester side.

However a dismal second half display was to follow and with five minutes to go the inevitable punishment followed as the home side equalised.

There had been much to be pleased with in the first half with Martinez in agreement with that: “I think we did everything we had to do in the first half – I thought we controlled the environment and everything that comes when playing against a newly-promoted side.’

“We coped with things really well and did the hardest thing in taking the lead twice. ‘

“We scored a very well-taken goal through Aiden McGeady – I think he looked bright throughout the game – and the second is a very, very good goal with the way we combined as a team.’
