Everton manager Roberto Martinez claims James McCarthy was fortunate to avoid ‘really bad news’ following a challenge in the draw at Leicester.

The midfielder received a prolonged period of careful treatment having gone down during the second half, but was able to play out the rest of the game.

Martinez: “As we all know, James is not a player that goes down easy so when you see him down you fear that something is really wrong. “

“He has a nasty stud mark on his shin. It was good that he was able to finish the game but it was a fortunate incident because it could have been really bad news.”

Everton started their season with a disappointing draw at Leicester City, and with the news that Ross Barkley could miss five months after an injury picked up in training it was fortunate indeed that there wasn’t similar news for James McCarthy.
