Loads of Everton fans discuss key role after blunder v. Chelsea: ‘Seems like he’s composed enough’

|

Everton managed to beat Chelsea two-nil at the weekend, but the result could have been very different had Gylfi Sigurdsson not fired his rebounded penalty into the back of the net.

Had Kepa Arrizabalaga palmed the ball out to the side or controlled the Icelandic’s low driven effort rather than diverting it back into the centre, our guests could have taken the momentum swing to go on and draw level.

Thankfully that did not happen, but fans on the R/Everton Reddit page have nearly had enough of Sigurdsson being given the task of taking our penalties now that he has missed again.

Since joining from Swansea, the 29-year-old has taken five penalties – all this season – but has only converted twice. His previous miss from the spot against Watford also had the chance to ruin a result as we were 2-1 down at the time, luckily going on to draw.

When Marco Silva gave Sigurdsson the task of being our penalty taker, there would likely have been less doubt in his ability from the spot as he never failed to convert for the Swans, and has only ever missed twice for Iceland.

Now, though, if he cannot convert more regularly, fans are starting to feel a change will have to be made.

While not in the main consensus of suggested spot-kick takers, there have been a few special mentions for Leighton Baines to come back into the first-team fold as a ‘specialist’ tool.
