A deal to bring Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton is still on with Ronald Koeman playing down rumours talks with Swansea had broken down, when commenting in his pre-match news conference ahead of Stoke.

Much as Paul Clement confirmed, when revealing Sigurdsson wasn’t in the Swans squad to face Koeman’s former side Southampton, talks are ongoing and the Blues boss remains confident a deal is indeed close.

Koeman was quoted by Sky Sports: ‘I heard some rumours it has broke down. That is not the case, we are still in negotiations. It is always a game between the selling club and buying club, but we are close and let’s hope we get an agreement as soon as possible. Soon is okay, I spoke about really soon and it was last weekend. Let’s wait. Let’s see. We are not in a hurry.’

Everton have spent a considerable amount of money this summer and brought in plenty of firepower but Koeman is still on the lookout for another forward to replace Romelu Lukaku.

He added: ‘We’re still working on targets, and that’s difficult because replacing Lukaku is difficult. I don’t say impossible but 25 goals is a lot and we need to find other ways and productivity by other players. We’d like to bring some more in.’
