“It would be a dream” – Wayne Rooney on potentially managing Everton

|

England and Premier League legend, Wayne Rooney told CNN in a recent interview that potentially becoming Everton manager in the future “would be a dream”, but not his only one.

Wayne Rooney would join Everton at the age of 9 and make his first-team debut by the age of 16 after performing magnificently at all levels in the youth academy.

He would score his first goal for the club just days before his 17th birthday, scoring a famous last-minute winner against Arsenal at Goodison Park.

After just two years with the first team on Merseyside, the Englishman would sign for Manchester United where he would stay for 13 years, becoming the club’s all-time top goalscorer with 253 goals and a club legend in the process.

He would return to Everton after his 13-year spell in Manchester, scoring a very impressive 11 goals in 40 appearances at the age of 32.

His career would come to an end 3 years later after spells at DC United and Derby County before retiring at the age of 36.

The 37-year-old is now the manager of his former club, DC United. However, success has not come straight away. His side finished bottom of the Eastern Division in MLS after accumulating just 27 points in 34 games.

Rooney recently did an interview with CNN where he was asked about his playing career and what he wanted to get out of his fledgeling coaching career.

Obviously Everton and Manchester United are the two clubs who are really close to my heart so to manage one of them two would be a dream.”

“I’m still gaining a lot of experience from what I’m doing. You want to learn, and I want to go into Everton or Manchester United, I want to go in there and be able to give the best version of me.”

Current Everton manager, Frank Lampard has been at the forefront of a lot of criticism recently due to some poor results. Although his job does not seem to be under any immediate threat, the Everton board could well be looking at some relatively long-term potential replacements for Lampard. Wayne Rooney could well be one of these, although he may not be the most qualified.
