Everton have confirmed that midfielder Andre Gomes has undergone a scan on the ankle injury sustained against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Portuguese suffered the blow late into the first-half against the Eagles, and will continue to be assessed ahead of the visit of Watford to Goodison Park at the weekend.
Replays focusing on Gomes’ injury showed Palace forward Andros Townsend accidentally standing on the Blues star’s ankle, which forced boss Marco Silva into an early change with Jean-Philippe Gbamin awarded his Toffees debut.
Gbamin is now in line for his first start in Royal Blue, regardless of if Gomes’ ankle issue shows any signs of healing before the boss decides who will face the Hornets on Saturday, as Morgan Schneiderlin was shown two yellow cards against Palace and will be suspended for the week two encounter.
Fabian Delph is still working on his return to fitness from a groin injury, as well, while Tom Davies may have to be deployed in a deeper role despite expressing desires to establish himself as a more advanced midfield option.
“It’s good to be versatile,” Davies said in July, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo. “But I’ve always been an attacking midfielder, and I think that’s my best position where I can affect the game going forward.”
Some Everton supporters on Reddit would like Silva to play Davies in the holding role alongside Gbamin, however, with fans taking to the social media platform to share their reactions to news of Gomes undergoing a scan on his ankle.
