Injury boost for Everton as “everything is going well” with midfielder’s recovery

|

Carlo Ancelotti has given an injury update on Andre Gomes ahead of Everton’s meeting with Newcastle United, revealing that “everything is going well” in regard to his recovery. The 60-year-old said in Monday’s pre-match press conference: “Andre Gomes (is) training individually and everything is going well, but it takes time. (He) suffered (a) big injury.”

How will Everton fare against Newcastle United?

Win

Draw

Lose

Gomes has been out of action with a broken ankle for two-and-a-half months, picking up the injury in Everton’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur (November 3). The 26-year-old has missed 14 games in all competitions but is nearing a return. He’s at Finch Farm doing gym work and conditioning, so supporters could see Gomes back out on the pitch in February.

The Portuguese international looks to be returning much sooner than anticipated, but Ancelotti won’t want to rush him back. The Everton manager has Fabian Delph, Morgan Schneiderin, Tom Davies and Gylfi Sigurdsson at his disposal, so he’s not short on options in Gomes’ stead.

The Toffees are finally over a midfield injury crisis that forced Mason Holgate to play in a makeshift role and will soon welcome back a player who was outstanding on loan last season. Gomes has made only nine appearances since turning the move permanent last summer and will be keen to make up for lost time.
