Marcos Rojo nearly joined Everton over the summer before Manchester United pulled the plug on a deal as they didn’t want to strengthen a Premier League rival. Despite the 29-year-old being surplus to requirements and failing to make a single appearance in any competition, he was still denied a move away from Old Trafford and wasn’t happy with the club’s decision.

He told Ole: “It’s difficult to leave when you are in such a big club. I had the possibility of Everton, but by decisions of the club or the manager it wasn’t possible. Now I have to fight until December and if it doesn’t work out, I will try to leave. The qualifiers and the Copa America are coming and I want to be part of that. I don’t want to be out again, I want to exhaust all the possibilities and compete to be here.”

Everton were in the market for a centre-back after releasing Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams, but the Toffees failed in their bid to sign Kurt Zouma and had to turn their attentions elsewhere. Marco Silva left himself short at the back and has been forced to rely on Mason Holgate for cover. The Blues’ late attempt to sign Rojo failed on deadline day, but they could return in January.

The Argentina international admitted he will be considering his future at United if he remains on the periphery over the coming months, so Everton might have another opportunity to land their man. Silva has Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Holgate at centre-back and will surely make signing a fourth defender a priority in January.
