“I cannot make a clear statement” – Defender admits uncertainty over his Everton future

|

Jonjoe Keny admitted in a recent interview with Ruhr 24 via Sport Witness that his future at Schalke 04 and Everton is uncertain, despite recent reports suggesting he’ll spend next season at Goodison Park.

The 23-year-old has impressed on loan at Schalke, so much so that the Bundesliga side want to bring him back to the Veltins-Arena next season. Kenny was previously open to staying in Germany too, but he’s now stopped short of committing to either club.

Which club did Everton loan Cenk Tosun out to in January?

Kenny told Ruhr 24: “I haven’t heard too much about it. For me, the most important thing at the moment is to adhere to the requirements for the coronavirus and be as safe as possible so that the team can perform at the weekend.

“We’ll see what happens at the end of the season, but at the moment it’s only about Schalke and the next eight games. I have not heard so much from Everton, as they’re in a difficult place at the minute with the Coronavirus situation in England. At the moment, I cannot make a clear statement about my future.”

Kenny rose through the youth ranks to the Everton first-team in 2017 and has gone on to make 40 appearances in all competitions. The right-back hasn’t managed to hold down a starting place at Everton, however, which has led to loan moves away for more playing time.

He’s made seven appearances for Wigan Athletic (July 21, 2015 – September 20, 2015), 20 appearances for Oxford United (January 27, 2016 – May 9, 2016) and 27 appearances for Schalke (July 1, 2019 – present). With Seamus Coleman and Djibril Sidibe ahead of Kenny in the pecking order, it’s easy to see why he may be reticent to return to Everton.

The Toffees have been linked with a host of right-backs who could push the 23-year-old out next season – Santiago Arias, Jesus Corona, Bouna Sarr – so it remains to be seen where his future lies.
