Idrissa Gueye is close to extending his contract at Everton, which is something David Unsworth is still hopeful he can do from his caretaker role as boss into a permanent one.

However, heading into the meeting with Leicester on Sunday, the former Blues defender doesn’t have any further updates on his own future.

He did, when speaking in his pre-match conference ahead of the game at the King Power Stadium, enjoy a productive meeting with chairman Bill Kenwright and owner Farhad Moshiri on Friday but said ‘nothing’s changed’ and his focus remains on getting results, building on an improved performance in defeat against Chelsea in the League Cup on Wednesday.

‘My dialogue with the chairman has always been good. There are no hidden agendas. I’ve spoken to Farhad Moshiri but nothing’s changed. I’m fully focused on Sunday. I’m clear what my role is day to day until somebody tells me otherwise. We will just keep doing what we do best,’ Unsworth was quoted by Sky Sports.

‘It’s always about getting results…this is Everton football club. We expect results. It’s no different in the way we apply ourselves, way we want to play. we’ve had a great training session today. I don’t think anyone enjoys losing but there were many positives to take from the Chelsea performance.’

One of the main positives from the defeat was Beni Baningime – he was promoted from the U23 side to make his first team debut and that could leave him in contention for a Premier League bow.

Unsworth added: ‘He’s a top young player. He’s been outstanding over the past 18 months for the U23s. For Sunday, we will pick a team to win a game with the individuals we have available. So far the players have been outstanding in taking my message on board. I like a smile around the place, an atmosphere where players feel free to express themselves.’

Meanwhile, Gueye, who saw red in Ronald Koeman’s final game in charge but has proven highly influential and successful since the Dutchman brought him to Goodison from Aston Villa in 2016, is close to extending his Blues deal.

He said: ‘Gueye’s contract is very close. It’s great news for us because he’s a top, top player. To tie him down here for a number of years is fantastic. He is a good guy as well, really humble and he is going to be a top Everton player.’
