“Frightening”, “Wonderful” – These Everton fans react to award-winning effort

|

A few Everton fans have been reacting on social media after the club shared that Gylfi Sigurdsson’s strike against West Ham United had won the October Goal of the Month award.

Marco Silva had dropped Sigurdsson to the bench for the Hammers’ trip to Goodison Park last month, with summer signing Alex Iwobi drafted into a central midfield role for only the second time in the Premier League since his £34million move.

Silva had described the match as a ‘must-win’ fixture for his job, as a run of poor results had seen the club slip inside the relegation places having taken just two wins.

An early strike from Bernard when the Brazilian tucked home from a tight angle set the tone for the game, before Sigurdsson would leave the bench in the closing stages and fire a thunderous effort from the edge of the area.

Sigurdsson teased West Ham’s Mark Noble with a deft cut back as the veteran midfielder attempted to win possession thinking a shot was incoming, leaving the Blues creator with yards of space to pick out the roof of the net with an award-winning effort.

The West Ham win was the first time this season that Sigurdsson had not started a top-flight match, but came after the Iceland international had failed to score in any of his eight appearances and had registered only one assist.

The 30-year-old had scored four times in the opening eight games of the 2018/19 league campaign, as he went on to end the season as our joint-leading goalscorer with Richarlison on 13 strikes for the term.
