Academy graduate Pennington spent the recently-concluded season on loan in the Championship with Ipswich Town, having put pen to paper on a new three-year contract with us earlier in the year, once he returned from a temporary spell at Elland Road with Leeds United.
With the Tractor Boys at Portman Road, the 24-year-old centre-back made 34 appearances in all competitions, and scored one goal, which came during one of his rare outings at right-back.
His second successive loan spell does not appear to have helped his future on Merseyside, though, as he is being chased by a number of lower league sides as we are thought to have opened the door for Pennington to go out in search of regular football again.
Derby County and Wigan Athletic have both shown an interest in the former England U19 international, but the Stoke Sentinel claim it is Stoke City who are winning the race at present, with Nathan Jones keen to add a Premier League defender to his ranks after Ashley Williams’ loan spell expired.
Pennington allegedly won over his range of admirers for his bravery and willingness to defend as Ipswich were relegated from the Championship, and it seems like another loan move is on the cards.
Here’s how these Everton supporters reacted to the report of Pennington’s potential exit on the Grand Old Team forum…
“Good player and a decent lad by all accounts, but not good enough for top half PL team. Hope its [a] permanent move so he [can] make a proper career for himself.” – Mighty Moyes (June 5, 12:53)
“Should be a perm contract, not another loan. We do too many loans out. Should take a hit on the fee, don’t think he’s a Prem player at all, and that Derby goal he scored a few years back saved him probably becoming a first-half sub that game he was that bad.” – Ring Master (June 5, 12:54)
“The first deadwood gone?” – HKToffee (June 5, 13:15)
“Best move for him [to] get regular games and improve. Could see him with another Prem team. Maybe try include sell on fee?” – Mikel_88 (June 5, 13:19)
“Please be a perm, surely the only reason he got a new contract was for us to get a fee?” – ToffeeJack (June 5, 13:43)
“Didn’t Stoke take Williams and Martina on loan last season? Is Steve Walsh working for them??” – Suey_11 (June 5, 13:48)
“I suspect we’d have got a fee as long as a contract was on offer because he is an Academy product. I did think it odd, though, that he signed a contract given he could’ve negotiated his own deal elsewhere.
“Apparently a really good lad, academically very bright, he’s one of the rare breed of young professionals who continued to study up to A Level where he did very well.” – Eggs (June 5, 13:48)
“He is very much a Championship player. Which is fine, but at 24 he should not still be contracted to Everton.” – Mikeh72 (June 5, 13:50)
“Get shut. One of many hanging around the wages bill with no prospect of becoming a top player. he will make more than a decent living elsewhere.” – Everton1953 (June 5, 14:55)
“Good to see us finally moving on some of these players round the fringes of the squad. Could even be the summer we finally get Garbutt off the books!” – Saint Domingo (June 5, 15:02)
“I saw him several times play for the u21s, and he impressed me with his composure and leadership. However, it just goes to show once again how big the gulf is.” – OnlyMe (June 5, 21:38)
