Lots of Everton fans have been reacting on social media, after former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy lauded Director of Football Marcel Brands for inspiring his passion for coaching following a decorated career as a player.

Van Nistelrooy enjoyed an 18-year playing career that featured five seasons at Old Trafford, four campaigns with Real Madrid and was consecutively named as the KPN-Eredivisie Player of the Year whilst with PSV Eindhoven.

The 70-time Netherlands international also ended seven seasons as the leading goalscorer of the division he was competing in, with van Nistelrooy prolific for PSV, Manchester United and Madrid. He also lifted one Premier League title, one FA Cup, two La Liga honours and two Eredivisie crowns before retiring in 2012.

Two years after hanging up his boots van Nistelrooy took up a position as an assistant coach with the Dutch national side, but it was whilst working in PSV’s youth set-up that he found his love for life after playing.

Brands was working as PSV’s Technical Director during van Nistelrooy’s return to the Eredivisie giant, and has lauded the now Everton chief for having a transformative impact on his career plans.

“If you asked me as a player if I would ever get into management or training, I would have said: ‘No way, never. Impossible,'” van Nistelrooy said, via quotes by Everton’s official website.

“Marcel was the one who approached me, invited me to come back to PSV and got me settled back here. I owe him that he found me my second passion after my playing career. That’s a great thing he did for me.

“He helped me with everything I needed – my coaching badges, with having a place at the club training the players. He guides you through decisions.

“When we first met, we spoke about what’s next, because I didn’t want to jump into it [coaching] straight away. He really guided me through that and now I’m fully back into it with the Under-19s job, which I am enjoying a lot.”

In other Everton news, the club have reportedly been offered a 49-cap international who’s been involved in a goal every 113.2 league minutes this term.
