Explained: Why Kieran Dowell hasn’t played for Wigan Athletic in February

|

Kieran Dowell joined Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season in January and has gone on to make four appearances in all competitions, amassing 336 minutes of playing time.

The 22-year-old hasn’t featured in February, however, missing the Latics’ 1-0 win over Leeds United (February 1), 2-1 defeat to Preston North End (February 8) and 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough (February 11) due to a hamstring injury.

Dowell is making good progress with his recovery but it remains to be seen whether he’ll return in time to face Cardiff City on Saturday. In his absence, Paul Cook has Samy Morsy, Lee Evans and Joe Williams to call upon.

Dowell will be desperate to return as he’s been short of playing time in 2019/20. The central midfielder spent the first half of the season on loan at Derby County but only featured in ten games from a possible 28. He’s been without football for two weeks at Wigan.

Back at Everton, Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, Morgan Schneiderlin, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Tom Davies stand in Dowell’s way of getting first-team football, so he needs to put himself in the shop window by impressing on loan.
