Explained: Why Everton missed out on signing Sacha Semaoun this summer

|

Everton were showing an interest in Sacha Semaoun over the summer and have sent scouts to watch him playing at youth level for Girondins Bordeaux. However, the Blues failed to procure his signature and La Depeche (h/t Sport Witness) recently revealed Semaoun has joined Toulouse. So what went wrong?

Under the instruction of Director of Football Marcel Brands, Everton were looking to target young players and lower the average age of the first-team squad. The aim was to develop promising talent and eventually sell them on for a significant profit.

It’s why Everton signed the likes of Alex Iwobi (23), Moise Kean (19) and Jean-Philippe Gbamin (23) this summer. Semaoun would be one for the future, however. Marco Silva has Gbamin, Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, Tom Davies, Morgan Schneiderlin at his disposal, so the 18-year-old Frenchman would have to develop in the u23s before promotion to the seniors would be considered.

La Depeche didn’t state than an official bid was lodged by Everton, however, and revealed that Semaoun wasn’t keen on moving abroad. Whether the Blues have a chance of procuring his signature in January or next summer remains to be seen.
