Explained: Which four players left Everton on deadline day?

|

Everton were one of the busiest clubs on transfer deadline day, completing four pieces of business before the window shut at 11pm on January 31 – Morgan Feeney (to Tranmere Rovers), Lewis Gibson (to Fleetwood Town), Kieran Phillips (to Huddersfield Town), Jonas Lossl (to Huddersfield Town).

Feeney will spend the rest of the season on loan at Tranmere and will compete with Manny Monthe, Sid Nelson and George Ray for a starting place at centre-back.

The 20-year-old will be desperate to impress and hope word gets back to Everton, as his contract is up in July. Feeney looks likely to be released as he’s made only two first-team appearances for Everton.

Does Feeney have a first-team future with Everton?

Gibson will spend the rest of the season on loan at Fleetwood Town, but the 19-year-old doesn’t have to worry about his Everton future – Gibson signed a new deal with the Toffees before his move. Should Gibson impress at Highbury Stadium under Joey Barton, he could find himself in contention for promotion into Everton’s first-team next season.

Phillips will spend the rest of the season on loan at Huddersfield Town, but the 19-year-old will join up with their Elite Development Team. He’s out of contract in the coming months too, so it remains to be seen if he has a future on Merseyside.

Lossl will also spend the rest of the season on loan at Huddersfield Town, returning to the club he left to join Everton as a free agent only six months ago. The 31-year-old failed to make a single appearance this season and could return to Huddersfield to be their No.1 after Kamil Grabara’s injury.
