Explained: The embarrassing statistic that will haunt Everton

|

Everton suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Sheffield United on Saturday and finished the day 14th in the Premier League table. The Toffees have now lost three of their last four games and continue to have a real problem scoring goals – Marco Silva’s men have netted one or less goals in five of their previous six outings and have been completely shut-out on three occasions already.

It’s an embarrassing statistic given Everton signed Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean over the summer to inject creativity and goals into the squad. Only Newcastle United (4), Aston Villa (4), Watford (4) and Crystal Palace (3) have scored fewer goals than the Blues in 2019/20 and Silva’s job could be on the line unless he can turn things around.

Everton scored more goals last season than 60% of other Premier League sides, courtesy of Gylfi Sigurdsson (13 goals, 6 assists), Richarlison (13 goals, 1 assist), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (6 goals, 2 assists), Theo Walcott (5 goals, 2 assists) and Lucas Digne (4 goals, 4 assists) among others. This campaign, however, Sigurdsson (0 goals, 1 assist), Calvert-Lewin (1 goal, 0 assists) and Walcott (0 goals, 0 assists) aren’t pulling their weight.

After an EFL Cup outing with Sheffield Wednesday (September 24), the Merseysiders next face Manchester City (September 28) in the league. Silva’s job security could be precarious if they fall short against the champions.
