Explained: Full breakdown of the transfer rumour involving Everton and Dortmund’s playmaker

|

Vital Everton have given a breakdown of a strange transfer rumour involving Everton and an out-of-favour Borussia Dortmund playmaker…

Who is saying what?

According to Augsburger Allgemeine, Everton are showing an interest in Mario Gotze and could make a move for the Dortmund midfielder in January. The Toffees have to battle Sevilla, Lazio and AS Roma for his signature.

Why would Gotze leave BVB?

The 27-year-old has struggled for playing time under Lucien Favre this season, making just three appearances in all competitions and racking up a paltry 37 minutes of football.

Gotze is reportedly unhappy with the lack of opportunities at the Westfalenstadion and doesn’t want to waste the best years of his career sitting on the bench.

His contract is up next summer and there’s a chance he could leave Dortmund on a free transfer as things stand. Augsburger Allgemine say the Bundesliga giants are keen to keep Gotze but don’t want to pay large wages if he’s not commanding a starting place.

How can Everton sign him?

Everton can offer Gotze a pre-contract deal in January as he’ll be out-of-contract in July – the German international signed a four-year deal with Dortmund in 2016 after leaving Bayern Munich. Gotze could become a free agent next summer if he doesn’t put pen to paper on an extension.

Summary

Gotze would be a good acquisition for Everton, but it’s hard to see the 27-year-old leaving Dortmund for Goodison Park as it would be a step down in his career.

Money is an issue too. As per Silly Season, the midfielder is Dortmund’s second-highest earner in the squad (£169k-per-week) and would set Everton back around £8.6m-a-year in wages. There may not be anything in this story.
