Explained: Everton loan exit couldn’t have gone worse for 26-year-old

|

Muhamed Besic joined Sheffield United on loan because he was deemed surplus to requirements at Everton, but the 26-year-old can’t seem to get a game with his new club either.

Besic has made just two appearances for the Blades this season, both of which have come in the EFL Cup. He’s been an unused substitute in six of United’s seven Premier League games but hasn’t come off the bench.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina international finds himself fifth in the pecking order under Chris Wilder, behind Oliver Norwood, John Lundstrum, John Fleck and Luke Freeman. It may take an injury before Besic gets any Premier League minutes.

He’s been given full 90-minute appearances in two EFL Cup games against Blackburn Rovers (August 27) and Sunderland (September 25), but Besic didn’t join the Blades to be on the periphery.

The defensive-midfielder’s last appearance for Everton came against Sunderland on September 20, 2017. He’s embarked upon loan moves away from Goodison Park to get regular minutes, so Besic can’t be happy about his current situation.

Wilder has 26 players in his Premier League squad for the season, but only 13 of them have started in the top-flight. The United manager seldom changes his side when everyone is fit, so Besic has a tough task to edge his way in.
