Explained: Everton have to pay £26.6m and more than £1.5m in wages to sign La Liga defender

|

Everton are on the hunt for at least one central defender this summer as Phil Jagielka is out of contract in the coming weeks and Kurt Zouma may not return to Goodison Park next season. Marco Silva could be left with only Yerry Mina & Michael Keane at centre-back and will need to bring at least one defender in the opposite direction.

The Toffees have been linked with Diego Llorente of Real Sociedad and are reportedly lining up a bid for his signature. The report says Everton could offer £26.6m for the defender, but Llorente’s wage demands are harder to define. According to the Global Sports Salaries Survey, Sociedad’s average wage is £1.49m-a-year/£29k-per-week.

Llorente is a regular at the Anoeta Stadium so he should at least earn the average. The 25-year-old joined La Real from Real Madrid in July 2017 and has gone on to make 57 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals. This season, the Spanish international has made 23 appearances, 21 of which have come in La Liga.

Sociedad finished ninth in the division last season with 50 points from 38 games, conceding as many goals as Real Madrid (46).
