Explained: Everton could save £10.9m-a-year if out-of-favour quartet leave this summer

|

A summer exodus could be on the cards at Everton this summer, as the Toffees have a number of out-of-contract players and many on the fringes of the first-team who may be allowed to leave – Oumar Niasse, Cuco Martina, Cenk Tosun, Luke Garbutt and Shani Tarashaj have been tipped to depart in the coming months.

Should the football season be cut short now or delayed for weeks/months due to COVID-19?

There’s another out-of-favour quartet who may be ending their association with Everton too, however. The Liverpool Echo reported on Thursday that Yannick Bolasie, Sandro Ramirez, Matty Pennington and Muhamed Besic could soon be on their way out when they return from their respective loan deals. The four players leaving could see Everton earning back £10.92m-a-year in wages.

Bolasie earns £3.9m-a-year/£75k-a-week, Sandro takes home £3.38m-a-year/£65k-a-week, Pennington makes £0.78m-a-year/£15k-per-week and Besic is on £1.56m-a-year/£30k-a-week. Everton can reinvest the money saved on wages, but they may not get much in transfer fees for the four players.

Sandro’s market value is £3.6m, Bolasie’s asking price is €4m (£3.48m), Besic has a £9m price tag and Pennington’s market value is £0.9m. According to the Financial Football News, Everton’s debt level fell in 2019 but is still at £37m. The Toffees will chip away at the figure by offloading a number of outcasts over the summer and are cutting a lot of money off the wage bill too.

The fact so many Everton players could be on their way out of Goodison Park with replacements needing to be signed highlights how wasteful the club have been with their spending – Besic cost the Toffees £4m in 2014, Bolasie cost £25m in 2016 and Sandro cost £5.25m in 2017.
