Explained: Everton could lose out on £9m this summer, latest report reveals why

|

Morgan Schneiderlin could be on his way out of Everton after struggling for form and playing time this season. The 29-year-old made only 14 Premier League appearances in 2018/19, spending the majority of the campaign out of the matchday squad.

Everton spent £24m on Schneiderlin in 2017 but Liverpool Echo say the Toffees could agree £15m for the midfielder – a £9m loss after two years. The French international ended the season on a positive note, featuring in Everton’s last four games, but his future remains uncertain.

He fell behind Andre Gomes, Tom Davies and Idrissa Gueye in the pecking order and made only one league appearance between mid-October and mid-February. Schneiderlin has two years remaining on his deal at Everton, but he might have to leave to guarantee a starting place.

Marco Silva has a midfield problem this summer. Gomes has returned to parent club Barcelona and is potentially joining Tottenham this summer. Gueye has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. James McCarthy could leave for more first-team football elsewhere too.

So, if Schneiderlin also departs, he could be the fourth midfielder to leave in one summer. Everton would have to spend a sizeable amount replacement the quartet. It doesn’t help that the Toffees aren’t getting back every penny they paid for the 29-year-old either.
