Explained: Could Euro 2020 be the reason Everton’s 28-year-old finally leaves?

Cenk Tosun doesn’t have a future at Everton, but he’s been adamant on fighting for his place. The 28-year-old turned down a move to Galatasaray and Qatar in September, but Sport Witness believe the upcoming European Championships in 2020 could be the reason Tosun finally leaves.

Tosun has 16 goals in 42 games for Turkey’s national team and has only missed seven games for his country in four years. The centre-forward has been in fine form too, scoring and creating four goals in three games, so he would be a shoo-in to make the squad next summer. He needs to be playing, though.

Turkey manager Senol Gunes has spoken out about Tosun’s situation, telling Milliyet in October: “Cenk isn’t ready. He is on the bench at Everton for quite a while. This isn’t a cool situation for us. We want him to play. But unfortunately, that’s not been the case for him at the moment. Hopefully, he will solve his situation soon.”

According to Aksam, Besiktas are among many clubs interested in Tosun’s signature and want to bring him back to familiar surroundings in January. Tosun scored and created 77 goals in 142 games for Besiktas between 2014 and 2018 before his move to Everton, but the striker has been reticent to leave England.

Turkey are top of Group H in the Euro 2020 qualifiers with 19 points from eight games. They next face Iceland (November 14) & Moldova (November 17) and should book their place in next summer’s tournament. Tosun will need regular football to ensure he keeps his place in the squad.
