Explained: 3 failed loans in 18 months, 4 apps in 2020 – Everton man’s career spiralling

Kieran Dowell has spent the second half of this season on loan at Wigan Athletic but hasn’t made the desired impact – the 22-year-old is currently sidelined with an ankle injury picked up in training and hasn’t featured since January.

Unfortunately for Dowell, this is his third disappointing loan spell in 18 months and could spell the end of his Everton career – he’s not featured in the Toffees’ first-team since October 2018 and hasn’t impressed out on loan in the last two seasons either.

The midfielder joined Sheffield United (January 2, 2019 – May 31, 2019) last season and went on to make 17 appearances in all competitions. Dowell contributed just three goals, however, and amassed only 79 minutes of football in the last four weeks of the season.

He joined Derby County (July 11, 2019 – January 2, 2020) at the start of this campaign but made only four appearances in as many months before cutting his loan short in the new year. Dowell’s move to Wigan hasn’t gone to plan either.

The 22-year-old has made just four appearances in 2020, the last of which came in January. There’s less than two months of the season remaining, so Dowell is running out of time to make an impact at the DW Stadium.

He has one year left on his Everton deal, but it’s hard to see him joining up with the first-team in 2020/21 based on the last 18 months.
