Roberto Martinez has played down suggestions that Everton are inching closer to signing Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.

Everton’s main summer target has always been Lukaku.

Either on another loan deal or on a permanent basis, Roberto Martinez has been clear that he wants to see the 21-year-old Belgian International return to Goodison Park next season.

Due to the World Cup in Brazil talks and negotiations for International players have been delayed, but Everton have always been an option for the Belgian striker.

‘I have the opportunity to stay at Everton, it is a possibility and it is something we will have to talk about.’ Lukaku reportedly said to the Belgian media after the World Cup.

However Everton are unsurprisingly not the only club interested.

Wolfsburg in Germany and Italian champions Juventus have recently been linked, whilst Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti fancies Lukaku if he doesn’t complete the signing of Radamel Falcao from Monaco.

He would command a price tag in excess of £20million but it seems Roberto Martinez is prepared to break the bank for Lukaku if the opportunity arises to sign him permanently.

That said reports over the weekend accompanied by a youtube video claiming the deal was close has been played down by Martinez.

“There have been a lot of reports, some even saying I`ve told people it`s done but the situation is very clear.

“We need a number nine going into the start of the season and we will make sure we sign one.
Martinez told The Echo.

He continued: “Rom created incredible memories we`ll never forget and enjoyed his time at Everton but that doesn`t mean anything between now and the end of the window.

“Everything is in the air and you can imagine there are options on the table. We`ll try to work hard on it.”
