Everton appear to be leading the chase for one of their summer transfer targets with fresh reports emerging earlier in the week.

According to Thursday’s print edition of L’Equipe, via Sport Witness, the Toffees are ‘one step ahead’ in the pursuit to land Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes this summer.

It’s claimed that the Brazilian will cost €22m (£20m) with Napoli another club keen on clinching him. His manager at the Ligue 1 outfit, Christophe Galtier has even confirmed that the defender will leave the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Should Brands pay £20m for Gabriel?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

There’s also an interview with Gabriel in the paper with him speaking about his ambitions, he said:

It’s gratifying because there are a lot of clubs talking about me. I want to go as high as possible. I came to Europe for that reason. I talk a lot to Luis Campos to see where it is best for me because he has a lot of experience.”

The 22-year-old is a rather impressive talent having been lauded as an “absolute machine” by Lille president Gerard Lopez, and it’s easy to see why when delving into his numbers for the season.

Who did Everton sell Nikola Vlasic to in July 2019?

Per WhoScored, Gabriel has averaged 3.3 clearances, 1.8 tackles and 1.2 interceptions from 30 appearances in all competitions, which includes games against both Chelsea and Ajax in the Champions League.

At just £20m, the Toffees could have themselves another centre-back for the long-term future. He and Mason Holgate would be a defence for years to come.

If Everton have the funds to do it, then Marcel Brands should absolutely pull the trigger this summer.
