Everton loanee scores ‘Controversial’ goal in Championship

|

Everton loanee Nathan Broadhead scored a late goal for his side in a 2-1 loss to Sheffield United. However, his strike caused a lot of controversies as he was seemingly clearly offside.

Broadhead joined Wigan Athletic during the summer window after spending the second half of last season on loan in League 1 with Sunderland where he scored 13 goals and helped them on their road to promotion to the Championship.

He was heavily linked with a move back to Sunderland in the summer, however, because of Ellis Simms’ arrival at the black cats, Broadhead was deemed to be surplus to requirements.

The Welshman eventually ended up joining Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan deal.

Despite starting the season well, the Latics went 7 games without a win, eventually leading to the sacking of head coach Leam Richardson, with former Premier League defender Kolo Toure being his replacement.

Broadhead has struggled to hit the heights that he set last season, however, only managing to score 4 times in 20 Championship games.

Going into their fixture against Sheffield United, his side were clearly thought to be the underdogs, with Sheffield United sitting 2nd in the league compared to Wigan who were sitting 23rd.

The visitors would take the lead just 8 minutes in through John Egan and would double it early in the second through Billy Sharp.

65 minutes in, Broadhead would pull one back for his side after a cross-turned shot from James McClean was spilt by Foderingham in the United net.

However, Broadhead seemed to clearly be standing in an offside position when he prodded the ball into the net but it was not picked up by the linesman.

The game would finish 2-1 to the visitors despite the Latics’ best efforts to get something out of the game late on.

A trip to Middlesbrough on boxing day is next for Broadhead and his side as they continue to fight for Championship survival.
