Everton legend suffers heartbreaking defeat in first managerial outing

|

Everton legend Duncan Ferguson suffered a heartbreaking defeat in his first game as manager of Forest Green Rovers in League 1, with his side still rooted to the bottom of the table despite a spirited performance.

Ferguson had two spells as caretaker manager at Everton before leaving the club at the start of the season to continue his own route into management.

He was confirmed as the new manager of Forest Green Rovers last week after they sacked previous manager Ian Burchnall after his side went on a 7-game-losing streak interrupted by a draw with Exeter City.

Duncan Ferguson looked set to end that horrible run of form for the rovers after his side took an early lead away to Shrewsbury Town through an outrageous strike from Jordan Garrick.

However, in the 4th minute of injury time, Shrewsbury would draw level through Rekeil Pyke and would take an astounding lead just 4 minutes later, with Ryan Bowman sealing all 3 points for The Shrews and heart break for Duncan Ferguson’s side.

Despite the loss, Ferguson was very complimentary of his team’s performance in his post-match interview: [via FGRFC_Official – Twitter]

“It hurt. Believe me, it hurt really badly.”

“I thought the team were excellent today, really good performance, good organisation, good structure to the team.”

“The 6 minute overtime, i’m not sure where that’s come from”

“It was a disappointing end but a promising 94 minutes.”

Forest Green now face an important game against Peterborough at the New Lawn in their next outing. Every game from now surely must be of optimum importance if they are to have any hopes of surviving relegation.
