Earlier this afternoon the BBC were one of many to report that Wayne Rooney’s future now lies away from Everton.

Similar to other reports doing the rounds, the BBC stated that Rooney had agreed a ‘deal in principle’ to leave Goodison Park this summer and turn his attentions to MLS side DC United.

It’s said that Rooney’s representatives have been in the US to negotiate terms in recent times and that the 32-year-old former England international is willing to leave us once more for a new challenge. They do however state that nothing has yet been formally agreed or signed when it comes to the speculated £12.5million deal, but given manager Sam Allardyce’s position and future, Rooney could remain at Goodison Park for next season.

As the report references, speculation about Allardyce and Rooney’s relationship has been rife for a while, especially in terms of where Rooney now plays but Allardyce did earlier this week refute the continued speculation and stated that he wanted our Academy graduate to remain and said there were no issues with his role in the side.

As this season has played out though, many can now see the above happening. Especially given his angry reaction to being substituted last month in the scoreless draw with Liverpool. Rooney has played 31 times so far, four showings from the bench, and he is our leading goalscorer with eleven for the campaign.

It’s fair to say fans are largely mixed on this news, with many more upset about the way the season has been handled and his potential departure, as opposed to him actually departing this summer.
