Everton fall short in fierce contest with in-form rivals

|

Everton women lost their 4th match in 7 in this Women’s Super League season, narrowly falling short to in-form Manchester City. 2-1 being the final score.

The toffees lost their previous outing to league leaders, Manchester United in a 3-0 hammering after a disappointing performance.

Manchester rivals, Manchester City, however, had won their previous 5 fixtures on the bounce after a difficult start to the WSL season, losing their opening two fixtures to Aston Villa and Chelsea.

The Manchester outfit, therefore, were clear favourites going into the fixture, but with Everton having home advantage and the hundreds of fans that turned out at Walton Park on their side, the match was evened up a little.

Brian Sorensen’s side were not expected to score many, having only scored 6 goals in 6 matches this season and Manchester City having only conceded 1 goal in their last 5 matches, scoring a very impressive 18 in the same period.

The visitors started the stronger of the sides with former Everton winger, Chloe Kelly coming close inside the first minute of the game.

Everton would settle into the game quite quickly, however, putting the Citizens under pressure when in possession and that pressure nearly paid off on several occasions.

This pressure did eventually pay off after 40 minutes, with Danish centre-half, Rikke Sevecke heading in from a corner to tie the game going into half-time.

However, the blues would struggle to get out of the blocks for the second half and would be punished just 4 minutes in with WSL top scorer, Khadija Shaw slotting coolly past Ramsey to put her side back in front.

Sorensen’s side would create a few openings late on in the game through the likes of Galli and Bennison but they would be unable to find an equaliser, with the game ending 2-1 to Manchester City.

Although the game ended in defeat for the blues, the performance against a very strong City side of late shows signs of improvement from recent performances. Hopefully, they can build on this positive performance going into their Women’s League Cup fixture against Sheffield United Women at Glanford Park next week.
