Everton down under – Celtic preview

|

Everton kick off their tour of Australia in the Sydney Super Cup tomorrow morning against Scottish Champions Celtic. Even though this is a mid-season friendly, Frank Lampard will be expecting a performance from his players, not just a game to keep fitness levels up.

With Jordan Pickford, Conor Coady, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gana Gueye all participating in the World Cup, this could be an opportunity for some to try and stake a place in the first XI for the Boxing Day fixture at home to Wolves and James Tarkowski see’s the two games in Australia as an opportunity to build some confidence and get back to winning ways.

“These games are really important for us,” said Tarkowski. “After a tough week last week, it’s important that we get out here and perform well.”

“Every player here has got a different reason to go out and perform. Some lads have been playing week in and week out but maybe not to the best of their ability, some lads are desperate for the opportunity to get into the team and start.

“Also, the young lads as well, they want to go out there and show the manager what they’re all about.”  – EvertonFC

Everton have played Celtic twenty-two times, with the Scottish champions winning 1-0 in the last outing back in 2006 with Aidan McGeady who played for both Everton and Celtic scored the winner.

Celtic who lost the opening game vs Sydney on Thursday 2-1 will be hoping to bounce back and will have the backing of the home crowd with manager Ange Postecoglou returning to the venue of one of his most famous coaching wins when Australia won the AFC Asian Cup in 2015.

Kick off is 2.45pm AEDT / 3.45am GMT
