Marus Bent has admitted the players are shocked following the 4-0 thumping they took from West Brom. The Everton striker says the team now have to go back to basics.

He told the official site: ‘Everton are all about going out and every player working 120%, not just grinding out results, but sometimes playing good football and always working for each other. But on Saturday it didn’t happen for us for whatever reason. We didn’t play well as a unit and maybe if we had done we’d have got a result’.

And David Moyes, who had hoped the team had turned the corner following two wins and a draw which was enough to pull them away from the Premiership basement, said that his players need to prove themselves capable of recovering from this setback.

‘We have to draw on the previous three games against Chelsea, Birmingham and Middlesbrough when we played well and look to respond with a similar sort of performance when we play again’

Adding that the team can’t look for excuses and must show more ‘determination’ and ‘steel’.

‘It was not very good. We have had some good performances in recent weeks but that wasn’t the case here. I think the first goal came from a penalty where the challenge took place outside the box and that changed the course of the game. But I am not blaming that for our performance. I expect an Everton side to show more steel and determination than that. Teams can play poorly but you shouldn’t be found wanting when it comes to winning battles on the pitch. You should be determined and competing and we didn’t have enough of that.’
